The San Francisco Chronicle praised the restaurant
Santa Rosa’s most romantic restaurant
“Long regarded as Santa Rosa’s most romantic restaurant, La Gare serves exquisite French food without being over the top. The menu is studded with traditional and adventuresome dishes such as Chateaubriand, sweetbreads, and sautéed frog legs, though there are fresh fish and vegetarian options, too. The wine list includes labels from California and a variety of wine regions in France. For dessert, try the homemade chocolate mousse, sweet, simple and delicious”

Fantastic French Cuisine at reasonable prices
We were here a little over a year ago, and made a promise to come back then. And we are glad we did – we had the best restaurant meal in over a year!
To start, we discovered that they had one of our favorite Pinot Noirs, unobtainable elsewhere – a 2013 Papapietro Perry Russian River, which we can’t even get as wine club members.
My wife had the salmon special, and I choose the Escalope de Veal Dijonnaise.
All entrees come with soup and salad, which started with a creamy celery and leek soup. I was expecting a more typical thin broth, but this was a rich, very flavorful soup, of a perfect size.
The soup was followed by a mixed greens salad with the house special mustard dressing – again, a perfect size and the dressing really accents the salad.
My wife pronounced the salmon excellent, but I believe I chose the real winner. The veal was done perfectly, and the dijonnaise mustard sauce really enhanced the dish.
We ended the meal with very good desserts. My wife had the crème Brule, but again I think I won with an amazing locally produced Wild Blackberry Cabernet sorbet, which we both agreed was incredibly rich in flavor.
Service was impeccable, from the arrival greeting through the entire meal. No used plate was allowed to linger on our table for more than a minute, but the service was also unobtrusive, and our server followed up with us at very appropriate intervals to make sure everything was to our liking.
IMO the prices at La Gare are very reasonable, especially considering the overall experience and quality of the food and presentation – AND considering that most entrees include the soup and salad, which are often extra priced items elsewhere.
This place is now on our “must eat here every time we are in Santa Rosa”

Don’t miss the flaming table side Cherries Jubilee!
Old school French fare in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square, with a menu that bursts with butter. If you’re on a diet you can either go somewhere else or shatter the calorie counter. This is Julia Child-era French cuisine, from Escargots de Bourgogne to Carré d’Agneau persillé to Crème Caramel Beau Rivage. The most popular menu item, however, is the Chateaubriand or Steak Au Poivre.
Don’t miss the flaming tableside dessert of Cherries Jubilee!

Guests raved about the food
Excellent food, service, and planning from this family-owned and operated business. I think every one of our 70 guests raved about the food, service, and location of La Gare which is in quaint Railroad Square and easy walking distance to the Hyatt and Marriott hotels.
Fabulous as always!
Fabulous as always! From the crab cake appetizer to the expertly prepared Caesar salad done tableside. Fresh halibut special never disappoints. The filet mignon was candy! Topped off with wonderful desserts and all delivered with a high level of service. It’s no wonder they have remained a mainstay in Sonoma County for 38 years! Here’s to 38 more!

A Santa Rosa Icon
As other reviewers have said, this restaurant has been around for many years and sports the traditional French cuisine. It is family owned and has wait staff that has been there since its opening! Attention to service is exceptional. Our waiter Tim was extremely attentive to our needs and delivered spot on. We have been going to this restaurant over the years and have found the quality of the food to be consistently superb. Their price point also has not significantly changed as well. It’s one of the few restaurants that includes soup and salad with your entree. The escargot is exceptional, the French onion soup exquisite, and the wide variety of meats are truly melt in your mouth. Treat yourself to the table side prepared cherries jubilee flambé to satisfy that dessert craving. Best French restaurant in Sonoma County.

Complimentary dessert for our occasion
This was the 27th anniversary of our first date at La Gare, and the chef continues to create the authentic French cuisine we loved the first time. Our appetizers were great – can’t go wrong with a huge shrimp “cocktail” and classic escargots with the luscious butter and garlic. The rack of lamb was done perfectly with a great Dijon mustard crust; the beef tenderloin also excellent. And a nice treat with a complimentary dessert for our occasion – creamy chocolate mousse.
I will definitely be back!
I have been wanting to go to La Gare’s for many years and finally had the chance. It had been a very long week and I just wanted to sit quietly without too much conversation and have a nice dinner. My waiter was a gentleman named John. I had made that request and John was gracious in honoring it. THANK YOU JOHN!!. I went in just to have escargot and a glass a wine. Ended up having a 4-course meal, including dessert, port, and coffee to end it all. It is a great place that is elegant, quiet and the staff is very professional. Not to mention the food is excellent. It was nice to just sit and people watch and enjoy a great meal with superb wine. Thank you La Gare for making the end of my week so enjoyable. I will definitely be back.

Very Authentic!
Very much enjoyed our first visit to La Gare. From the warm welcome to the terrific wine list we were launched into a perfect evening. The menu and specials were all enticing and we had fun deciding on our meals. The waiter was wonderful and made us feel right at home. We had spent time in the Alsace region of France and we felt transported back to that lovely area- it was very authentic!
The food was tremendous and we will be back. We can’t wait to take our French friends to this restaurant which is the highest compliment of all!
